Implants when you've been told there isn't enough bone
Last verified: September 17, 2026 · Consumer information only, not medical advice
The short version: "not enough bone" is rarely the end of the conversation in Tampa; it's the start of a different one. The routes are: bone grafting before or during placement ($400-$1,500 per site, $3,000-$8,000 for larger reconstructions), a sinus lift for the upper back jaw ($1,500-$5,000), angled implants in the full-arch protocol that use existing bone, short implants, and, for severe upper-jaw loss, zygomatic implants anchored in the cheekbone ($20,000-$40,000 per arch). Who told you "no bone" matters: a general dentist without grafting training may be describing the limit of their practice, not of your jaw. A periodontist or oral surgeon is the natural second opinion.
The options, plainly
| Option | When it's used | Tampa range | Who typically does it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Socket / ridge graft | Moderate loss at one or a few sites | $400-$1,500 per site | Periodontist, oral surgeon, trained GP |
| Block graft / major reconstruction | Significant loss across an area | $3,000-$8,000+ | Oral surgeon, periodontist |
| Sinus lift | Upper back jaw, thin bone under the sinus | $1,500-$5,000 | Oral surgeon, periodontist |
| Angled implants (All-on-4 style) | Full arch; avoids grafting by using front bone | Within full-arch pricing | Implant centers, surgeons |
| Short / narrow implants | Limited height or width at a site | Standard implant pricing | Varies |
| Zygomatic implants | Severe upper-jaw loss where grafting isn't viable | $20,000-$40,000 per arch | Oral surgeons with specific training; few Tampa providers |
The questions that matter here
- What does my CT scan show, in millimeters, at the sites we're discussing?
- Which of the options above apply to me, and why that one?
- How many of this specific procedure have you done, and what's your failure rate?
- What's the total added cost and time versus a case with good bone?
Zygomatic work in particular is a small-numbers specialty; ask for the surgeon's case count directly. See choosing a provider and the directory for Tampa's oral surgery groups and periodontists.
